After wondering myself, I decided to find out what Lokal’s was all about and if they had anything for a burger lover like myself. Although they seem to be more proud of their baked wings and sauces, they should be better known for the BOOYAH burger I devoured the other day and which I’d recommend to anyone. Let’s discuss.

The BOOYAH burger is a baked half-pound patty of descent meat topped with thickly sliced honey cured bacon that drips wholesome goodness with every bite or squeeze. There is also some cheddar AND provolone cheese, fresh lettuce, thick slices of deliciously crispy pickles, big tomato slices, red onions, some spicy brown mustard and after I added a touch of ketchup it was complete. They serve the BOOYAH burger on a thick and lightly flavored bun that holds up well against the flowing burger juices. If they flavored their meat this could be among my all-time favorite burgers but without that it was still pretty darn good. Now one note is that Lokal’s isn’t a french fry place, they are a Spud Rounds place. Beautifully baked thick-cut potato slices that come in spicy, plain or mixed. I could have gone for a bigger serving of spud rounds but they were wonderful with their smokey fry sauce.

The atmosphere is open and inviting with plenty of TVs and a pool table. They do serve alcohol if that’s on your mind and the staff is friendly and honest in their opinions. You can add Guacamole, sprouts, jalapenos, bleu cheese chunks or any of their sauces for .99 but the BOOYAH burger is already priced ridiculously high at $11.99 so with that in mind this burger is more expensive than Five Guys, Smashburger, Lucky 13, Chubby’s and most gourmet burgers. I’ll still eat a few more but this is a $15-$20 meal with a drink and spud rounds so be warned. Overall the Lokal’s BOOYAH burger was delicious, flavorful, the bacon was richly delicious and I think I’ll add sprouts to my next one. If you’ve got a hankering for a new burger place and an extra $15 it’s a great burger I’m proud to recommend.

Sammy’s has been a Provo hotspot for a while with music, fun and pie shakes but they’ve recently added locations in Salt Lake City, Rexburg, Idaho and at the golf course in Cedar Hills. I’ve had some Sammy’s meals in Provo but it was time to experience one of these newer locations to see if the magic can be replicated. As we got closer to the Cedar Hills golf course it was a welcoming sign to see the Sammy’s van out front, we were getting close. The restaurant is beautiful and open with plenty of seating a just enough Sammy’s personality to feel right. Today’s experience was the Sammy’s Masterpiece.

The Sammy’s Masterpiece is a 1/3 pound burger with provolone cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms, bacon, gaucamole, bbq sauce, lettuce and tomato between a lightly toasted Sammy’s bun. The first note is that this is only a 1/3 pound patty, not a lot of meat here but Sammy’s is probably best described as a place where the toppings make your burger different, not the meat. It was a good burger but not great. The meat was absolutely normal, the toppings were good and worked well together and the bun worked well with everything. I added a side of fries which, with a drink, turned my meal into $9.29 expense. For what I got it was a debatable value. As for their regular fries, they are served as fresh cut fries and taste pretty darn good. Sammy’s fry sauce has a smokey taste with the fry sauce tang which means it’s a tasty addition to the fries and your burger. Sammy’s also offers some pretty good sweet potato fries.

But let’s be honest, Sammy’s Cafe isn’t especially known for their burgers although the toppings would suggest otherwise, Sammy’s Cafe is the official home of the Pie Shake. The Real Pie Shake offers a wide selection of delicious pie additions to a powerfully yummy shake. They also have cupcake shakes and malts so even if you go somewhere else for dinner, the pie shakes are pretty darned good! The Cedar Hills location is nice, clean and bigger than the Provo original but it is missing some classic history that only the Provo location can offer. Overall it was an average burger with a great pie shake for dessert.

Today’s destination was the one and only Woody’s Drive-In near Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. Woody’s has been here since 1989 and you know it’s a special place when you talk to Mr. Woody’s himself about the food, the history and why he started a burger drive-in. The best part was that the food was pretty darn good too.

Woody’s cuts their own delicious fries, makes their own fry sauce and offers fried zucchini, fried pickles and screams 50s drive-in service. I decided to try their popular Woody’s Burger with pastrami and was a very happy eater. The bun is fresh, chewy and fits the burger and pastrami nicely. The shredded lettuce, large pickle slices and fresh tomatoes made for a great burger and the beef patty made magical things happen when it hooked up with the pastrami on my burger. The fries at Woody’s are what will bring me back though. Absolutely delicious fresh cut french fries with their sweet, tangy fry sauce still have my mouth watering. They even offer the hidden gem of beverages known as Iron Port. Made fresh, fun old-town feel and definitely worth a trip. Seating indoors and out, drive up service and family owned and operated since 1989 in addition to delicious fries and a good tasting burger makes Woody’s a place to try.

I also mentioned the fried zucchini and fried pickles earlier. Let’s talk about how good those were. The batter is phenomenal so I’m assuming you could make almost anything tasty with some a deep fry but the pickles and zucchini were delicious and combined with either their fry sauce or their white ranch/tartar sauce it’s a fried food lovers heaven. Another highlight about Woody’s is their prices. Everything is priced super cheap and hasn’t changed in years. Burgers for $1.29, cheeseburgers for $1.49, sides, ice cream and Iron Port. Go try Woody’s today! I’m glad I did.

And the burger joints just keep coming to Utah. Yes, that’s a good thing. The latest addition is The Habit Burger Grill which is another “originally started in California” style burger joint gracing Utah with their presence and I’m happy to report that it’s a great addition to the burger family. The Habit Burger Grill is at 2121 S. McClelland Street in Salt Lake City right by Smashburger. Their first few days in Utah they did fundraisers for the YMCA with all proceeds from the days sales going to the YMCA. Already a great start and worthy of a visit but how is the burger?

Short answer: Delicious. The Habit Burger is loved for their Charburger which is their secret to success. An open flame charbroil grill that adds flavor and keeps the burger patty juicy with a relatively unique flavor. The ranch dressing they add to their Charburgers is a secret recipe they make daily with another rather unique element to the burger is the way they layer the toppings. First off, the bun is delicious. Not super chewy or thick but just right for the patty. The bottom of the burger is the very freshly shredded lettuce with pickles and then tomato on top of that. The tomato acts as a buffer between the cold fresh ingredients and the freshly char-grilled beef patty which is topped with cheese and their grilled onions. It made for a very, very fresh tasting burger that kept the lettuce and pickles light and cool for the whole meal while the patty, cheese and onions were warm. It was a truly delicious experience and best described as a fresh, lighter tasting burger.

The fries are pretty standard, typical fast-food fries that were good but not great however they have a Sweet Potato fries option which I also tried and they were absolutely superb. No ketchup or fry sauce needed with the perfectly salted and sweet sweet potato fries. Good portions, fresh toppings and a salsa hot bar with jalapenos and other peppery options for those looking for a kick. Overall my Habit Burger maden voyage was a wonderful experience and I’d like to highly recommend giving them a try. The Double Charburger meal was $7.20 with fries & drink while the Single Charburger meal was $6.20. Good price, great food, better staff.

Today was Winger Burger day and as a fan of the sticky fingers and the official Winger’s Amazing Sauce I was hoping for a good burger with some of that magic on it. Bingo! Their new signature Roadhouse burger with Amazing Sauce a.k.a the Winger Burger is born. Time for the details.

So what is a Winger Burger? It’s a half-pound all-beef patty, hand-pressed to burger size and grilled with Amazing Sauce and finished with some mighty Earl Burger Butter. Then some delicious cheese is melted on top and the newly prepared patty is gently placed in a freshly buttered bakery bun with it’s own Amazing Sauce spread, lettuce, onions, tomato, pickle with a giant pickle on top. Why a pickle? Why not a pickle! The final Winger Burger is served with steak fries which are fat and decent. In all honesty, fries should be on the list of things to improve to make this meal standout but one thing at a time. The Winger Burger itself was juicy, messy, delicious and I did lick my fingers afterwards, but who wouldn’t when there’s Amazing Sauce on them.

Our server was fantastic, my drink was always full, the food was fresh and burger was quite nice. In fact, I’m happy to report that if you find yourself at Winger’s you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that you’ll be quite happy ordering a burger. As I said earlier, the fries are fine but you won’t find yourself craving them later. As a side note, the Winger’s menu had a whole page dedicated to explaining how their beef is additive free, hormone free and filler free. Credit to Winger’s for focusing on quality beef and sharing that with us.

As for the line I read over and over from Mr. Eric Winger (big wig at Winger’s) which is: “I challenged Chef to create the Best Burger in the World, and he did!”, they came close but I can list a whole bunch of better best burgers in the world:)

We’ll save that for another post for today is Arctic Circle Double Cheeseburger review day. Complimentary ice cream cones, friendly staff, amazing shake flavors and big time fun play areas aside, Arctic Circle seems to popular wherever they are so here goes.

Let me be clear, I’ve never been a fan of Arctic Circle burgers. It’s the bun. I’ve had the cheap burger, the Ranch burger, the Double Cheeseburger and lots of their chicken sandwiches and yet to have a good bun. They always taste like they are from the closeout bakery and like they were microwaved earlier in the day to try to restore any freshness potential. Usually cracking with the first squish, today’s Double Cheeseburger was no exception, yet another less than impressive bun. The double cheeseburger itself wasn’t bad at all. The cheese squares slowly melted as I ate and it was a nice, gooey cheeseburger. I added bacon at the suggestion of the large stature gentlemen behind the counter and frankly, the bacon was a pleasant surprise. Thicker, hardier than I was expecting and it worked well with the burger (except for the bun of course).

Arctic Circle fries are delicious. The Yukon fries campaign was fun and the new golden crispy fries are quite good with the official Arctic Circle fry sauce. I’ve always liked fast food fries so there’s no surprise in my complimenting these golden gems. Overall, Arctic Circle please, please consider changing your buns or getting them from somewhere else or even just keeping the bag closed in the back because they are always dry and I know it doesn’t have to be that way. Priced at $3.99 (there’s a special) I was full, satisfied and only mildly frustrated by the bun. All those fries and fry sauce galore made up for everything though…as did the chocolate dipped ice cream cone.

First off, my first Johnny Rockets experience was at the new Lehi, Utah location on Cabela’s Blvd. Surrounded by new outlet shopping and great views Johnny Rockets is set up for success with a great location and sparkling sign. I walked into a great layout with a fun diner style and plenty of seating with the staff being very welcoming and we were seated quickly. That’s when the energy and atmosphere became less exciting and more like I was in a local fast food establishment with unhappy high school kids reluctantly standing around. Maybe a bad day but that was the vibe and it was uncomfortable.

The food was ok. It wasn’t super busy but the wait was substancial and although the ketchup was presented beautifully on small plates for the children with character drawings, the service and food was mediocre at best. I went with The #12 and regular fries to start out with and was underwhelmed. I’d venture to say that perhaps if this location had a drive thru window or was a serve yourself type of place it would have gone over better but my drink was refilled once at the end of our lunch when the check was dropped off and my wife’s was empty the entire visit. The #12 needed a fresh bun but the ingredients were good. The special chili ketchup is nice but overall there wasn’t anything there that made me want to crave a second visit. The fries were average and the overall atmosphere was visually exciting but the people aspect left me wanting more.

From what I’ve read on their site and the overall vibe of what Johnny Rockets could/should be, I’m thinking that if you are in California you may have a better experience but as the locations venture out it doesn’t feel like the employees are buying into the vision. I’ll go back when I’m older and try a different burger but more out of duty and less because I’m really wanting to go. Good luck.

I’ve always enjoyed the Red Robin atmosphere but have had such varying experiences based on location, time of day and general mood of the server that I was ready for anything. First off, let me just clarify that Pig Out Style means bacon, bacon sauce and more bacon. It’s pretty hard to screw up with that many bacon options and Red Robin nailed it. It wasn’t a huge burger, it was a double with good and tasty bacon with a bacon aioli over the patties. Fresh, tasty, bacony and priced under $10 with drink. The bottomless fries are always a win as well.

For a final review, the Red Robin Tavern Double Pig Out Style was pretty good. I’m not a huge fan of Red Robin fries but these steak fries were fine. The burger wasn’t grossly filling but hit the spot and there was definitely bacon. Overall a win for me, a win for Red Robin and of course a win for bacon.

From Ronald McDonald and the Fry Guys to the tongue twisting Big Mac song that I still mess up on, good times for sure.

In other words, I had a great burger at Lucky 13 today and it was called The Nut Butter Burger.

I’ve had a few peanut butter burger offerings around the country and this peanut butter burger has been the best.. With a layer of deliciously gooey peanut butter over Lucky 13 smoked bacon and medium-well cooked chuck beef your taste buds will be happy, intrigued and asking for more after the first bite. Warning: if you don’t like peanut butter you won’t like the Nut Butter Burger.

I went with the original fries and a giant mug of Coca-Cola which brought the whole meal together. I’ve yet to leave Lucky 13 hungry and each of their burgers has been unique, tasty and worth their price and I’m happy to report that The Nut Butter Burger is right there..

In case you haven’t heard, Lucky 13 is home to a very prestigious award. The recently won the title of World’s Best Burger award in Las Vegas at the World Burger Championships. When you go to Lucky 13 you’ll immediately feel welcome and be in very good company. Bring your ID because it is a bar.
