White Castle Sliders, Cheeseburgers and Fries

White Castle BurgersI am no longer a White Castle virgin.  That’s right, it happened.  Last night I experienced my first White Castle slider, White Castle cheeseburger, White Castle A1 slider, White Castle bacon cheeseburger and White Castle fries.  In other words, I got my White Castle on.  I immediately had a combination of interesting scenes go through my mind including a little Harold and Kumar mixed with the White Castle Under Cover Boss episode I watched recently, both very different yet intriguing.  With that said, my first White Castle experience was fantastic.

The lady that took my order was fun, quick and commented on the variety of White Castle foods I ordered.  When I told her it was my first time she smiled and welcomed me.  Even the lady that yelled out my order for me to pick it up was pleasant, fun and professional.  I could hear the group of workers busily doing their respective jobs and all seemed to be enjoying themselves.  So far, so good.  Now it was time to eat.

White Castle Mission Complete

Mission Complete!

First off the fries looked like oven baked frozen fries and tasted about the same.  Not that there’s anything wrong with the frozen grocery store fries but I’ll say there’s nothing special about White Castle fries and I don’t see myself craving them any time soon.  The White Castle original slider on the other hand was very fun.  I really had no idea what to expect and at first glance it looked rather plain but when I had my first bite (nearly half of the slider so order a few) and the uniquely steam grilled beef mixed with light onions and vivacious pickle hit my taste buds I was hooked.  Very unique, very interesting and as I sat there for a moment I decided that very good was also coming to mind.

Next was the A1 slider which was missing the pickle but had onion and steam grilled beef.  It was overwhelmingly A1 steaksaucy so I’m glad I’m ok with that, no other flavor was present.  Next was the White Castle cheeseburger.  As good as the original slider but with cheese.  I think it was my favorite.  I finished the whole thing with my White Castle bacon cheeseburger and it was fine, thin sliced “fast-food” bacon which left a hint of bacon goodness on the palate but no bacon thickness, more like a flavor addition to the cheeseburger.  Overall, the onion and steam grilled beef mushy mixed well with the crispy pickles and I’m now an official White Castle fan.  It was also quite fun to see the quantity and which people liked to order their sliders:)  Great price and unique taste.  Thank you White Castle.  If you ever come to Utah I can see myself being a frequent guest.  White Castle experience complete!

Serving Time Cafe Prison Cheeseburger

The Serving Time Cafe is located at the Utah State Prison in Draper, Utah and was most recently known as Hard Times Cafe (thanks to trademark issues the name is changed).  Pulling in to the Utah State Prison parking lot is always a good time and I’ll admit the first time there I was a little anxious to make it to the right place….it is a prison.  Luckily all signs point to the Serving Time Cafe which is located in one of the front trailers.  There are a few outside tables for seating with another 15-20 seats inside.  The place is run by inmates who have obviously worked hard for permission to work in the Cafe and you can feel their passion for food and freedom as soon as you walk in.  The staff looks experienced and ready to serve and other than the trailer you’re eating in and the fact that you’re at the prison, the food is delicious.

Of course, as this is the first burger review trip to Serving Time Cafe I had to have the cheeseburger.  The burger menu offers burgers in the $2.49 – $4.49 range with a number of traditional options like bacon, double, cheese and the big daddy of them all known as The Captain.  The cheeseburger was really quite good.  The beef is from a pre-cut patty but it was cooked to perfection and plenty thick.  The additional toppings including nicely sliced onions, a fresh pickle slice, tomato and lettuce were all fresh and crispy and the bun was lightly toasted with a touch of butter and worked really well with the whole burger ensemble.  In a nutshell, the Serving Time Cafe cheeseburger was pretty darn good and priced right.

Serving Time Cafe DraperI went with a side of french fries and loved the touch of bbq flavor, probably from the other items on the menu being cooked in the same cooking oil.  I was presented with a generous serving of fries and was a happy and full lunch goer when I finished.  The meal only took about 5 minutes to be made and everyone I saw, including some of the officers there for lunch, looked satisfied and happy to be there.  For the experience and  good lunch, Serving Time Cafe should be on your list for a pleasant burger experience.  Tomorrow I’ll try The Captain!

Open Monday – Thursday from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

I Love Burgers Las Vegas Burger Review

I know that what happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas but I Love Burgers is something that has to be shared.  Located inside the Palazzo shopping area, I Love Burgers is a burger lovers paradise.  The name got me interested but walking up to the actual restaurant got me excited.  Open layout full of burgers and fries, a bar that goes all around the outside edges and a burger menu to die for.  From the Standard Burger to I Love Bacon burger to the Oregon Trail burger, I Love Burgers truly has a a little bit of everything burger.

Featuring Chef Errol LeBlanc going all out in regards to flavor and magically tasting burger goodness, I enjoyed the whole experience.  I ended up going with the Standard Burger and adding a fried egg and some bacon goodness.  Why the Standard Burger with so many burger options available?  Because I’m a burger purist!  The folks at I Love Burgers grind their own meat and use top sirloin so it’s more like they are preparing a steak than a burger.  After ordering it took about 10 minutes for my meal to be ready and it looked the part.  Great presentation and delicious looking meal so after a few quick pictures it was time for a bite.

The patty was delicious and cooked to a nice medium pink.  The cheese was nicely melted on top with fresh tomato, onions and lots of fresh lettuce.  The fried egg was a nice touch but if you’ve read any of my other burger reviews you know that I’m quite confident that a fried egg makes any burger better.  The bun was amazing and is made special for I Love Burgers from a Las Vegas baker and lasts from bite one to the end.  I could have eaten that bun plain and been a happy camper but I digress.  The french fry selection was about as varied as the burger selection but I stayed true to form with regular fries and the I Love Burgers “secret sauce” which is known in Utah as fry sauce (finally a place outside of Utah featuring God’s gift to french fries).

The overall I Love Burgers experience was fantastic.  I was able to try some of the potato wedges, mozzarella sticks, triple truffle fries and a nearly 15 different sauces including a really good aioli sauce and a too die for bbq sauce.  The burger was mouth watering and the fries were crispy and flavorful.  Be warned that the I Love Burger burgers are good size burgers so plan accordingly.  My meal including burger, fries and drink came out to about $20 and could have easily been more if I added one of the sensationally appealing shakes.  I can easily recommend I Love Burgers for a truly unique gourmet burger experience.

Umami Burger Madness – Burger of the Year?

Well GQ has officially named the Umami Burger as burger of the year and that got the burger lovers of the world going crazy on various sites, especially Shine by Yahoo which syndicated the Burger of the Year claim earlier this month on their blog.  Claiming that they don’t usually name a burger of the year but that the Umami burger is no ordinary burger, the review of the sensational burger experience of Mr. Alan Richman (the most decorated food writer in history!!) is a fun to read and makes me want to at least try a Umami Burger BUT is it really the best burger in America?

That’s the most asked question of any burger connoisseur and to say that a burger chain in California with four locations is the best burger anywhere may be a bit of a stretch.  Mr. Richman obviously has a gift for writing food reviews (he’s won a lot of awards) but one paragraph in the review made me think that perhaps there’s a need to try more “gourmet burger” places before proclaiming burger of the year for Umami.

“Fleischman, the founder of the modest but ever expanding four-shop Umami Burger chain, has rethought every element of the hamburger experience. The bun. The meat. The ketchup. The toppings. Even valet parking. Yes, at the original Umami Burger joint on La Brea, 900 square feet of utter simplicity across the road from a Goodwill store, every burger comes with parking, the ultimate in West Coast customer service.”

Doesn’t every burger maker with less than 5 locations claim to have redone the burger as we know it.  The bun.  The meat. The ketchup. The toppings.  That’s why I love burgers, because everybody rethinks the burger.  The comments on Yahoo are lighting up with the typical In-n-Out fan club rantings and the occasional Five Guys plug but the consensus seems to be that Umami, although amazing and probably deliciously intriguing probably isn’t worthy of Burger of the Year just yet.  It seems to be an issue of consistency.  Five Guys is the same burger every time.  In-n-Out is the same burger every time and the freshness is always there.  Communal (in Provo, Utah) has an amazing burger that may be as worthy as Umami for a burger of the year claim BUT that just won’t go over well with the masses.

So what’s the solution?  Is the Umami Burger the Burger of the Year?  Sure, but it’s only Alan Richman’s opinion and as long as he’s winning awards and writing for GQ then the rest of us will just have to clap for Umami and their Burger of the Year….and make a note to try it next time you’re in L.A.:)

Pago Burger at Pago in Salt Lake City

Pago Restaurant SLCPago is a great restaurant at 878 S. 900 E in Salt Lake City, Utah.  It’s amazing to see how many people they can fit in such a small area but what helped to make the Pago experience so special was sitting at the bar and talking with Chef Michael Richey as he makes what may be one of my new favorite gourmet burgers, the Pago Burger.   Apparently there’s even a Lamb Burger on the dinner menu sometimes so if you are in the area, a Pago stop is probably a smart move.

The Pago Burger itself is cooked with fresh Niman Ranch beef, caramelized onion, aioli and what can only be described at candy bacon on a freshly delicious bun with house made chips.  I really wish there were french fries as an option because Pago Burger and ChipsPago is the type of place that you know could make amazing fries but the chips sufficed for this trip.  After ordering it was a quick 5-10 minute wait for the food to be prepared and served in Pago style.

It’s a good looking burger my friends.  The bacon was so thick and shiny that I immediately broke  a piece to taste it and it was like candy bacon in the way the brown sugar took it to a whole new level.  The Niman Ranch beef was cooked medium rare and was complimented by the sweet, sweet bacon and aioli with shredded lettuce placed under the beef (bacon on top).  The bun looked and tasted the part as well and although there were no french fries I’m going to go ahead and say this was one of the best gourmet burgers I’ve ever had (let’s say this is the Communal burger of the Salt Lake area).

The chips which were the side for my burger are house made chips with a light, salty taste that were a nice addition to the meal if you like chips.   Overall the plate cost $10 for the burger and chips and if you get a drink (I did) you’ll be adding another $2.50 so beware.  Overall this burger knocked my socks off and I could go for that bacon anytime!  Thank you to Pago for surprising me with a Pago burger to remember.
